Washington Square West | My Philly Neighborhood

I live in a one bedroom and one bathroom apartment in Washington Square West. I found my apartment on Craigslist. It has a full kitchen, living room, bedroom, and backyard. Washington Square West is a fantastic place to live. The neighborhood is residential, filled with historic brownstones, and brimming with personality. It is surrounded by other great neighborhoods, like Bella Vista, Queen Village, the Gayborhood, and Center City. I love this neighborhood because of the food and location. I’m two blocks from Acme and Whole Foods on South Street. I am surrounded by great restaurants. To name a few: Crybaby Pasta, Angelo’s Pizzeria, Little Italy, Little Nonna’s, Emmy Squared, Nomad, Woodrow’s Sandwich Shop, and BAP. They’re all so good! Bon Apetit ranked the cheesesteak from Woodrow’s as the third best one in the city. You seriously have to try it! The neighborhood is within walking distance to other great places, like Queen Village, Center City, Old City, Bella Vista, Fitler Square, you name it. I’m close to the best parts of the city, but far …

The Family Law Society | Student Organization Voices Series

Your Name: Erin Ambrose Graduation Year: May 2021 Name of Organization: The Family Law Society Position in Organization: President Temple Law School: When did you join this organization? Erin Ambrose: I joined the Family Law Society as a 1L at the student organization fair! TLS: Why did you decide to join this group? EA: I decided to join this organization because it is an area of law that I am interested in practicing. I knew that the organization worked with the Family Law Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association so there would be great opportunities to network as well as learn more about this subject area. TLS: What is your organization’s mission? EA: Our goal as the Family Law Society at Temple is to increase family law awareness and allow students to explore family law opportunities. We want students at the law school to gain a deeper understanding of the various aspects of family law by hearing guest speakers, panel discussions, and attending networking events. We will also aim to raise awareness of the expansive …

Center for Compliance and Ethics Practicum

One of the benefits of being a Temple Law student is the opportunity to step out of the classroom and work in the field with practice area experts. As a participant in the Center for Compliance and Ethics Practicum, I have had the opportunity to build fundamental skills in healthcare compliance. Through the efforts of Professor Jon Smollen and Bea Raccanello, of the Center for Compliance and Ethics at Temple Law, I have been given the opportunity to intern with Temple University Health System and experience the day-to-day work of a compliance department in a major healthcare entity. No textbook or class discussion can measure up to the benefits of an experience like this one. I have been working at Temple University Health System in the Office of General Counsel, specifically with Senior Counsel, Corporate Compliance and Privacy Officer, Maribel Valentin. At Temple Health, I am gaining firsthand experience in understanding the compliance and regulatory risks of a major healthcare organization. I am actively learning and working in privacy matters related to HIPAA and HITECH. …

My Philly Neighborhood: Passyunk Square in South Philadelphia

When I’m not in class or studying in the law school library, I am enjoying time in my South Philadelphia neighborhood. My brother has lived in Passyunk Square in South Philadelphia for years and suggested I look for housing in the area. I quickly found my apartment on the real estate website, Zillow. I live on my own in a one-bedroom apartment and rent is around $1,600 per month. I chose to live in Passyunk Square because it’s charming, safe, and an easy commute to school. Each morning I walk 5 minutes to the Ellsworth-Federal station and ride the Broad Street Line (BSL) to Temple’s Cecil B. Moore station. The entire commute is around 20 minutes. It was important to me to live in a neighborhood near the BSL so that I don’t have to transfer between subway lines or trolleys to get to school. Living near the BSL also makes it easy to get to shopping and dining in Center City, though I often walk. There is a lot within walking distance in Passyunk …

Asian Pacific American Law Student Association | Student Organization Voices Series

Your Name: Cary Zhang Graduation Year: May 2021 Name of Organization: Asian Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA) Position in Organization: Lunar Banquet Chair   Temple Law School: When did you join this organization? Cary Zhang LAW ’21: I joined APALSA the first day of law school at the student organization fair. The APALSA leaders at the fair were so enthusiastic, I knew that I had found the support I would need to get through 1L year. Anyone (not just students who identify as Asian) can join APALSA their 1L year. TLS: Why did you decide to join this group? CZ: I joined APALSA to find support, mentorship, and friendship. Asian-Americans are underrepresented both in law school and the legal profession. I felt that getting to know people who looked like me and were “making it” in the field would be invaluable as I started my career. APALSA also helped me make lasting friendships. It can be overwhelming meeting so many new people at the beginning of 1L year, but APALSA gave me the chance …

My Philly Neighborhood: Queen Village

I moved to Philly specifically to attend Temple Law. I grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey, so I was excited to give city living a try, and living in Queen Village has not disappointed. I live in an apartment with two other Temple Law students that I met during my 1L year! We were lucky enough to make another friend whose parent was a landlord, so now we are also neighbors with another Temple Law student and one of our closest friends. Our apartment is the second and third floor of a row house. Queen Village is one of the older neighborhoods in Philly, so our apartment was built in the 1800’s. As it is a well established neighborhood, Queen Village is home to a lot of families. On a nice day, you will see kids riding bikes and scooters, as well as plenty of pups out for their daily walks. It has a very friendly and neighborly feel, even though it is only about a mile and a half from Center City. …

My Philly Neighborhood: Fairmount

Hi everyone! My name is Kate Sears. I live in the Fairmount neighborhood in Philadelphia, just 1 mile away from the law school, and I wanted to explain why I love my Philly neighborhood. I found my apartment through Apartments.com. Once I found my roommate through the Temple Law roommate list that was circulated through the Admissions Office and on the entering class Facebook Group, we narrowed down what we were looking for and input that into the Apartments.com website. We didn’t have to look very long or tour that many places before we settled on our 2 bed 2 bath apartment. Together, we pay about $2k including utilities and wifi, and we get a lot for what we pay. We ultimately chose Fairmount because it had the best of everything we wanted in our price range. It was a short walk to the subway and then a short trip to school, the area was safe, and the apartment had everything we needed. Fairmount is very residential with a lot of families, so we always …

My Philly Neighborhood: Commuting from the Suburbs

I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs, but was always drawn to the city itself. When I enrolled in Temple Law, I was excited to throw myself entirely into city life. I thought that during my time at Temple Law, it was essential for me to live in the geographic boundaries of Philadelphia. However, I quickly realized that this was not the case. Living in the suburbs as a Temple Law student is actually a very real possibility. We all know that law school can be expensive, and for me, living in the suburbs was a way to offset some of that expense. Luckily for me, my parents still live in the same suburb where I grew up and were willing to have me move back home after years of living on my own. As a current third-year law student, I commute to Temple Law every day using Septa’s Regional Rail System. The Regional Rail has trains that run from Philadelphia to the western suburbs, northern suburbs, and even New Jersey. I take the Paoli-Thorndale …

A Night Owl Takes Flight – An Evening Student’s Open House Experience

The Temple Law Admitted Students Open House is a must if you are still on the fence about where to go to law school. Before the Open House I already had an idea about what Temple Law had to offer and if it would be a good fit for me; but attending the Open House sealed the deal. The experience made me feel like I was already a student here. The day was packed with different events to give you a perspective of the many offerings here at Temple Law. Before breaking out to mock classes, Dean Mandel gave a welcome speech, highlighting how Temple Law values diversity of professional and personal backgrounds. The breakout classes were a great way to get to know some of the professors here at Temple Law and get a feel of how a law school class is structured. One of my favorite part of the day was the presentations on areas of study, I attended the Business and Transactional Law session, and the Tax Law session offered by Professor …

Open House – Your First Introduction to Temple Law’s Community

As a prospective law school student, I wanted to remain in Philadelphia, but was willing to move elsewhere if I did not find a school that seemed like the right fit for me. I visited Temple without any idea of what to expect. I entered intimidated by the very thought of law school and left ready to start as soon as possible. I had a surprisingly wonderful experience at the Temple Law Open House because of the passionate faculty, exciting experiential learning, smoothly run programming for the day, and thoughtfulness toward the prospective students. Open House was an accurate representation of the Temple Law experience. I have a B.A. from a small liberal arts school and an M.A. from an Ivy League university, and Temple Law has some of the best professors with whom I have worked throughout my academic career. Law school is not easy and can feel overwhelming, but professors are genuinely invested in helping students and want us to do well. I am very proud to be a part of this community. …
