Returning to a Legal Career through Temple’s LL.M.

Before coming to Temple Law, I had already built a legal career in Kazakhstan. After earning my LL.B. and a master’s degree in international law from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, I spent more than 20 years practicing immigration, corporate, business, and international law. I managed my own legal practice, represented clients before courts and government agencies, and advised individuals and businesses on a wide range of legal matters. When I moved to the United States, I initially told myself that I would not return to legal practice. I decided to pursue business instead and opened a trucking company. However, over time, I realized that I could not completely separate myself from the legal profession. I missed legal practice, legal thinking, and the work of helping clients solve serious problems. That realization pushed me to return to law and pursue an LL.M. degree in the United States. My decision to attend Temple was both practical and personal. Angela Sánchez LLM ’03 – How Temple Law Shaped Her Career

After practicing in Colombia for nearly a decade, I attended Temple’s LL.M. program in 2003 and specialized in taxation. I passed the New York Bar exam in 2006 and am now a tax partner in PricewaterhouseCooper’s Tax & Legal Services Department in Colombia. In the past several years, legal professionals in Colombia are expected to have earned an LL.M. in the United States. I now understand why. Earning an LL.M. at Temple was a key professional and personal challenge for me, and it enabled me to prove to myself that I could adapt to a different educational style and then practice law in the global context. The professors’ teaching style is excellent and unlike any that I had experienced in Colombia. I now use my LL.M. degree to advise on a wide range of international tax matters. After graduation, I first worked at Deloitte in New York City, an opportunity I never would have had without the LL.M. Studying for my LL.M. at Temple Law School Japan

I came to Temple University, Japan (TUJ) with no defined plan for the future. I had just finished a study-abroad year in Bristol, England, did not want to go back to my home country of France and wanted to become even more internationally minded . Studying for my LL.M. at Temple University, Japan was perfect for this! I was able to study both American and international law and discover a new culture. Studying at TUJ, interacting with the teachers and the legal community there allowed me to find several internships and the area of law I wanted to specialize in. I took part in an arbitration class offered by TUJ and decided that this was what I wanted to pursue, which led me to relocate to Seoul. Thanks to the TUJ staff and professors, I was able to receive great legal education, pass the California Bar, while at the same time enjoy and discover Japan!
