One year ago, I remember feeling nervous as I walked up the steps of Klein Hall for the first time. However, when I left that day, I felt empowered and ready for the next chapter of my life at Temple Law.
Before starting law school I knew I wanted to be a litigator. When choosing which law school I was going to enroll in, it was very important for me to pick a school that would give me the tools I needed to feel confident and prepared for a career in the courtroom.
Law students enter law school with so many different backgrounds, experiences, and obligations, all of which contribute to how we choose to adjust our schedules and operate on a day-to-day basis.
You have embarked on a new journey, but you have also joined a new community in the truest sense of the word. Think of those around you. Hold open the door for the person coming into class behind you. Introduce yourself to strangers. Say “Hi” to Carol when you swipe your ID card at the front desk.
Many people come to law school either to work for a firm or to become litigators. But I didn’t come to law school to litigate or to make partner; I came to law school to work in policy.
When I made the decision to apply to law school I was open to all possibilities. As acceptance letters began to roll in, however, I realized that I needed to make some tough decisions, and needed a system for evaluating my options.
Everything at PIP is hands-on; instead of just showing us how it is done, the PIP staff have interns do the tasks with them. From editing briefs to attending client meetings and court dates, PIP lets you take part in everything.
For me, a school that could make me think and feel like I had that day was where I wanted to be. The fact that I walked away feeling the way I did is less surprising now to me as a third-year student than it was then. Temple Law School has surpassed every expectation I ever had for what my law school education would entail.
I still have a long road to graduation in front of me, but with my first semester as a 1LE completed, I feel like I’ve learned a thing or two about being a student in Temple Law’s evening program that can help you if you’re thinking of taking on the challenge.
It’s Monday. 7a.m. I am 33 hours away from the final round of the Samuel Polsky Moot Court Competition. These days, my mornings start a little earlier than normal. I pace my apartment floor, still in my pajamas, practicing my presentation and carefully plotting every detail of a complex legal argument. My thoughts on the cases and the policies supporting my plea are interrupted only by pauses where I anticipate questions will fall and by the subtle hum of coffee brewing in the background.
