COMMUNITY REMINDERS

Summer Work Study and Matching Funds Application Update

Students who applied for summer work study should expect to receive notice of their work study eligibility early next week. The date when the Law Foundation Matching Funds Application will be available has been moved to Friday, April 16th. Information on applying for a Law Foundation Matching Grant will be included in your summer work study award notification.

How to Request Materials from the Law Library for Contactless Checkout

If you would like to request an item from the Law Library please complete this form.  You will receive an email from a staff member at the Law Library when your item is ready for pick up. Please allow at least 2 hours for your request to be processed during normal library hours. Requests received outside library hours will be processed the next working day.  You will be able to pick up your items from a cart on the second floor of Klein Hall. Items not picked up in seven days will be returned to the collection.

Study Aids Available through the Library

Third Annual LGBT Public Interest Scholarship Program Accepting Applications through April 31, 2021

The LGBT Public Interest Scholarship Program is sponsored by the ABA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Commission.

Criteria:

If you are a recent law student and/or law school graduate studying for the Bar, and either identify as LGBTQ, or plan to work in the LGBTQ space doing public interest work which may include, but not be limited to, working for Community Based Organizations (“CBO’s”); Non- Governmental Organizations (“NGO’s); policy work in a governmental and/or non-governmental setting; doing academic research, teaching or the like; or any other type of program that helps to promote and protect the Rule of Law and the civil and human rights of LGBTQ persons.

The Scholarship will provide financial support to a first, second or third year law student, or recent law graduate to enable the student or recent law graduate to work in the LGBT public interest arena for the Summer and/or Fall of 2021.

One or more scholarships of up to $5000 each will be awarded annually, subject to the availability of funds and the recommendation of the commission’s Scholarship Committee.

The objective is to award scholarship(s) in time for recipient(s) to utilize the funds during Summer/Fall 2021.

Patti Rose Scheimer Bednarik Memorial Scholarship

Public Citizen 2021 Law Essay Writing Competition

I. Herman Stern Moot Court Competition

The I. Herman Stern Moot Court Competition is a terrific opportunity for students interested in appellate advocacy to learn more about Moot Court. The final round will be streamed on YouTube on April 22nd at 4PM. A link to watch will be available on the Temple law school calendar and will be circulated next week.

WELLNESS PROGRAMMING

Mindful Mondays

Everyone is invited to participate in a 20-minute guided mindfulness meditation practice. Mindfulness meditation involves paying attention on purpose to the present moment without judgment. No experience is necessary. Watch this great video from Professor Meg deGuzman as she gives a brief presentation about mindfulness and engages in a short meditation practice. This is a great primer for Mindful Mondays.  Join us on Zoom, every Monday at noon. Our last Monday for the semester will be Monday, April 19, 2021.

SPRING 2021 EXAM INFORMATION

Spring 2021 Exam Schedule

Exams will begin on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 and end on Monday, May 10, 2021.  The spring 2021 examination schedule is attached to this email and posted here.  If you do not see your exam on the “Exam Schedule” document, please check the “Free Slot Exams” document and the “Take-Home Exams” document. All exams will again be administered remotely this semester.  Information about remote exams can be found here: https://www.law.temple.edu/academics/exams/. If you have a conflict please complete this form and email it to Ms. Kathy Wilson (kilson@temple.edu) by April 2, 2021. If you are an evening student requesting to take an exam on Saturday please fill out the form that’s located here. Submit this form no later than April 23, 2021.

COURSE SCHEDULES AND REGISTRATION

Summer Session 2021

Information regarding the Summer Session is now posted on the law school website. We will offer online JD synchronous courses, online JD asynchronous courses (May 24 through July 8) and online Graduate Tax Program synchronous courses (May 24 through July 29). JD students may take one asynchronous course and they may take Graduate Tax Program courses with permission. Exams for J.D. courses will be administered on the evenings of July 12-14. Exams for Graduate Tax Program courses will be administered on the evenings of Aug 2-5. The type and time of those exams will be announced once classes have begun.  Students are expected to be available to take exams during this time frame.

Students may register for a maximum of six (6) credits. Interested students should submit registration requests using the registration form below by 3:00 pm on May 7, 2021. Registration requests will be processed after May 7. Students will be notified to check that their summer rosters are complete. For limited enrollment courses, priority will be given to students based on: 1) their having submitted their requests by 3:00 pm on May 7, 2021, 2) their class year, 3) evening or day status, and 4) specific needs with respect to meeting graduation requirements. Requests submitted after 3:00 pm on May 7, 2021 will be processed as they are received. Requests should be submitted on the attached registration form (PDF) as an email attachment. The Community Fund for Black Bar Applicants

The Community Fund for Black Bar Applicants was founded by Octavia Carson, J.D.  The mission is to provide $500 grants to Black bar exam applicants across the United States. This mission stems out of a desire to diversify the legal profession and raise the percentage of Black attorneys in the United States from 5% to 20% by 2024.  Students can register for the fund here and each time the fund has $500 they will donate it to the first applicant in line to receive a grant. Students can apply multiple times but may be moved to the end of the list after they receive the first grant.
