{"id":83,"date":"2014-09-15T09:58:57","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T13:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/voices\/?p=83"},"modified":"2016-07-28T11:13:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T15:13:00","slug":"september-at-temple-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/voices\/september-at-temple-law\/","title":{"rendered":"September at Temple Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are just a few short weeks into the semester, and the Law School is a flurry of activity.\u00a0 Last week, we dedicated the Trial Lawyers\u2019 Hall of Fame, an interactive display featuring some of the nation\u2019s most prominent and powerful advocates.\u00a0 That the National Trial Lawyers Association selected Temple as the home of its Hall of Fame is strong affirmation of Temple\u2019s continued nationally renowned strength in advocacy training.\u00a0 We were honored to hear from one of the Hall\u2019s inductees, Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www7.law.temple.edu\/news-and-events\/morris-dees-addresses-temple-law-community-%E2%80%9Cyou-hold-the-keys-to-the-gates-of-justice%E2%80%9D\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here<\/a> to read more about Mr. Dees\u2019 remarks and the challenge he issued to the audience.<\/p>\n<p>This week, our own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.temple.edu\/Pages\/Faculty\/N_Faculty_Ramji_Nogales_Main.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Jaya Ramji-Nogales<\/a> was joined by her co-authors, Georgetown Professors Andrew Schoenholtz and Philip Schrag, as the three presented to a packed room from their book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lives-Balance-Adjudication-Department-Homeland\/dp\/0814708765\" target=\"_blank\">Lives in the Balance:\u00a0 Asylum Adjudication by the Department of Homeland Security<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>In Lives in the Balance, the authors analyze a database of 383,000 cases to better understand the effect on grant rates of a host of factors unrelated to the merits of asylum claims. The authors also examine the degree to which decisions were consistent among the eight regional asylum offices and within each of those offices.\u00a0 The findings are exciting, compelling, and make a strong case for legislative and policy changes to improve the asylum decision-making process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 2014-2015 Trial Team selections have been finalized and the team is already hard at work preparing for an intense fall competition schedule that includes the NITA Tournament of Champions, the Peter J.
