When I graduated from the University of Cape Coast, I found myself holding dreams in one hand and limitations in the other.

While pursuing my LL.B., I had the privilege of leading the National Union of Ghana Students, representing more than a million university students across Ghana. During that period, I experienced firsthand the barriers many students faced in accessing legal education. It was also during this time that I first developed the ambition to further my legal education in the United States and eventually become a lawyer here as well. Looking back now, I smile at how ambitious that dream was because, at the time, I had the goal but very little understanding of how to achieve it.

When I began researching opportunities for legal education in the United States, one thing I knew for certain was that I wanted to study in Philadelphia, the historic heart of American democracy and legal thought. Temple University quickly became the perfect choice. At first, I was honestly drawn to the name itself—it sounded memorable and welcoming. But beyond that, Temple stood out as a public university that offered both academic excellence and a level of financial support that felt accessible to students from backgrounds like mine.

Philadelphia represented everything I was searching for: history, law, democracy, diversity, and opportunity. To me, it had to be Temple University.

Today, I look back and feel even more confident in that decision, especially after experiencing firsthand how intentional Temple is about supporting international students. I have always believed that the value of international education goes beyond degrees and classrooms. The real value lies in the exposure, relationships, and life experiences that shape how we eventually contribute to our own home countries.

By the time I arrived at Temple, I had already been a student in five different universities and observed educational systems in many places around the world. Because of those experiences, I understood not only how to be a student but also how to appreciate the academic and non-academic structures that make a university community thrive. I was also the student who always had questions in class and never hesitated to attend office hours. I truly intended to maximize every opportunity Temple offered me.

I knew I planned to sit for the bar exam and become licensed in the United States, and Temple Law made that journey feel shared. From course selection to academic guidance, there was consistent support in helping international students navigate the path toward licensure.

My journey to the bar exam could honestly fill an entire book, but there were two conversations that changed everything for me—one in a lecture hall and another in a professor’s office, both within the walls of Temple Law. Deciding to take the California Bar was not a decision made with confidence or certainty. It came after disappointment in my New York Bar journey and was accompanied by genuine fear. But Temple Law taught me resilience.

There were periods when I studied ten to twelve hours a day for months. Even during moments when bar preparation felt mentally exhausting, there was always someone from Temple Law willing to encourage me, share a conversation, or simply remind me why I had started this journey in the first place.

I leave Temple with countless memories—memories that transformed how I think, how I learn, and how I approach the law. Memories of difficult classes, demanding edits in Legal Research and Writing, thoughtprovoking debates with professors, and moments that challenged both my intellect and confidence. Those experiences shaped me into the lawyer I am becoming.

Most importantly, Temple gave me a community that constantly challenged me to grow while reminding me that growth is rarely comfortable. Those lessons carried me through one of the hardest academic and professional challenges of my life and helped me pass the California Bar Exam on my first attempt in February 2026.

When you get the opportunity to walk through the hallowed halls of Temple Law as a student, live the memories fully. Enjoy the afternoon pizza and cookies served in the lobby. When you are finally able to tap your card and enter Temple Law, take the ungraded mid-term exams seriously. Hopefully, you might even get a C in Civil Procedure that hurts your ego enough to earn you a full-hour exam review meeting with your professor.

When you get the opportunity to become a Temple Owl, embrace your Legal Research and Writing classes. Draft, research, and learn to appreciate the constant stress and endless edits that come with becoming a better writer and lawyer. Finally, make sure you take a class that allows you to debate with your professors, and truly enjoy those debates, because one day, when you become an attorney, you may look back on your Free Speech arguments with your professor and smile.

Today, I leave Temple with an LL.M. and as a licensed attorney in the United States. But more importantly, I leave with a lesson that changed my life: I am allowed to have many dreams, and I am allowed to live all of them.

Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo Esq.

LL.M ‘26

Temple Made

Temple Proud.

For a young man who grew up in a part of the world where daily struggles were considered normal, I realized very early in life that I had more dreams than my environment seemed willing to permit.
