Each month, we\u2019ll release another write-up of a new Philly neighborhood. You can see each neighborhood covered so far <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.law.temple.edu\/voices\/tag\/my-philly-neighborhood\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I grew up in Fitler Square, a small, quaint neighborhood in the southwest corner of Center City.\u00a0The neighborhood\u2019s charm is defined by its Victorian-era, 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0and 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century row\u00a0homes and its close proximity to\u00a0Rittenhouse Square,\u00a0Taney Park,\u00a0and other Center City neighborhoods. The best part about Fitler Square is its diversity and exuberance; the neighborhood is\u00a0comprised of families, young professionals, students, and empty nesters.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>I grew up loving the neighborhood, and\u00a0I\u2019ve never strayed too far. I returned to the neighborhood when I started law school and I could not be happier with my decision.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What I like about Fitler Square<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While it\u2019s not far from Temple, living in Center City has served as a\u00a0welcome escape\u00a0from the\u00a0daily rigors of\u00a0law\u00a0school.\u00a0I can walk to great cafes and restaurants,\u00a0hang out in the park, and run along the\u00a0Schuylkill River\u00a0Banks.\u00a0Its location also means commuting to school or to work is easy.\u00a0Fitler Square is a ten-minute walk from the Broad Street Line and from Center City\u2019s commercial district.<\/p>\n<div class=\"aside aside--box aside--left\">\n<h3><strong>Fitler Square Rapid Fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Best thing about Fitler Square:<\/strong> Location. It\u2019s got everything you want in an urban environment: parks, cafes, restaurants, and shops.<br \/>\n<strong>Worst thing about Fitler Square:<\/strong> Parking is a nightmare.<br \/>\n<strong>How I get to Temple:<\/strong> I either take the Broad Street line or I drive. Both options are very easy (except parking).<br \/>\n<strong>Closest Grocery Store:<\/strong> South Square Market on 22<sup>nd<\/sup> and South Street.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Best Place For:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coffee:<\/strong> Caf\u00e9 Lutecia.<br \/>\n<strong>Drinks: <\/strong>Pub and Kitchen.<br \/>\n<strong>Dinner:<\/strong> Audrey Claire.<u><br \/>\n<\/u><strong>Dessert:<\/strong> The Igloo.<br \/>\n<strong>Studying:<\/strong> Good Karma Caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>On a\u00a0late\u00a0Saturday\u00a0morning, you\u2019ll\u00a0find me at Caf\u00e9\u00a0Lutecia. The French caf\u00e9\u2014located on the corner of 23<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0and Lombard\u2014epitomizes the neighborhood. The owners, John and Valerie Blum, are on a first name basis with all of their customers. People of all different backgrounds, ages, and interests find their way to the caf\u00e9 every weekend.\u00a0Whether you choose to eat their renowned soups or sandwiches (or both!), you\u00a0certainly\u00a0won\u2019t leave hungry.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to spend the day outside, you can\u2019t do any better than Taney Park. Taney is located along the\u00a0Schuylkill\u00a0River and\u00a0features basketball and tennis courts, a dog park, ample green space, and great views of the Center City skyline.<\/p>\n<p>At night, Pub and Kitchen is the spot. The bar has some of the best beers and cocktails in the city.\u00a0Whether you\u2019re looking to watch a game, catch up with friends, or go on a date, Pub and Kitchen is one of the best bars in the city.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What I don\u2019t like about Fitler Square<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are two issues with living in Fitler Square. First, the neighborhood is expensive. Rent tends to run north of $1,000 per month for a one-bedroom apartment. Although rent is high, it\u2019s still possible to find an affordable place to in the neighborhood\u2014particularly on Craigslist. The second issue is parking. The neighborhood is highly populated and parking can be a nightmare. There have been a few times where I\u2019ve driven around looking for a space for nearly an hour after I\u2019ve left Temple at night. Despite these issues, I still wouldn\u2019t want to live anywhere else.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to live in Center City, are a fan of green space and small restaurants, and can afford to pay a bit more for rent, Fitler Square might be the\u00a0neighborhood for you. Personally, living in Fitler Square has accommodated\u00a0all of my needs during law school.
