Mac Users: Hold Off Upgrading to macOS Ventura<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Apple will soon be releasing its latest operating system, macOS Ventura<\/strong>. At this time, Information Technology Services recommends not installing<\/em><\/strong> this upgrade when it becomes available because you may encounter compatibility issues with various applications used at the university.<\/p>\n

Once the university’s vendors certify that key applications used in our environment are compatible, we will notify you that it is safe to install this upgrade.<\/p>\n

CIVIL LITIGATION PRACTICUM (UNITED STATES ATTORNEY\u2019S OFFICE \u2013 CIVIL DIVISION)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There are up to three slots available for third- and fourth-year law students in this 3-credit Practicum supervised by Professor Marian Braccia.<\/p>\n

This Practicum with the Civil Division of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office in Philadelphia supplements traditional classroom study by offering students the opportunity to hone their legal skills by working with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) toward the resolution of cases in litigation or at the pre-complaint stage. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their substantive knowledge, sharpen essential lawyering skills, and appreciate professional values of the legal profession. Under the supervision of one or more AUSAs in the civil division of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office in Philadelphia, students will engage in and observe all phases of work of the civil side of the United States Attorney’s Office\u2014to include both affirmative and defensive litigation\u2014in subject areas including, but not limited to: torts, employment discrimination, civil rights, disability rights, environmental law, and healthcare fraud. Students will assist civil division AUSAs with a variety of casework, the nature of which depends upon the needs of each case. Assignments may include legal research, analysis, and writing; attending meetings and court hearings; assisting with witness interviews and taking\/defending depositions; drafting and responding to discovery; and participating in all aspects of arbitrations and trials (including witness examination). Externs will have regular opportunities for feedback.<\/p>\n

Students will need to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week to this Practicum. To participate in this Practicum, students must also be eligible for court certification. A security clearance must be obtained prior to the start of the semester’s work. Volunteer Judges Needed for Haverford College Mock Trial Tournament<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Haverford College is looking for Philadelphia-area lawyers, judges, or other law-educated people to judge for their annual Black Squirrel Invitational Mock Trial tournament over the weekend of November 5-6 at the Juanita Kidd Stout Criminal Justice Center. Judges are responsible for scoring student attorneys and student witnesses as they litigate a pre-written case. In some cases, a judge may be assigned to preside and rule on objections as they arise. No experience other than a basic understanding of rules of evidence is required. A judge training will take place to help you understand how the Mock Trial will go. There will be two rounds on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday and judges are welcome to volunteer for as many or as few as they would like. While timing has not yet been determined, the rounds will likely take place from ~9:00 AM – 12:00 PM and ~2:00 PM – 5:00 PM each day. January 2023 Graduates – Graduation Application is Now Open!<\/b><\/i><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The graduation application process for January 2023 graduates<\/em> is now open and will be available to our students until November 23rd<\/strong>. Please log on to TUportal at http:\/\/tuportal.temple.edu<\/a><\/span>, and follow these steps: Select the \u201cStudent Tools\u201d tab, then \u201cRecords,\u201d then \u201cApply to Graduate.\u201d The system will then ask you to pick your curriculum and term to finalize your graduation application. After you complete the online graduation application form, you will receive a message in your Temple email within 24 hours, confirming receipt of your graduation application. The email notice will also display how your full name will be printed on your diploma. If you need to update how your name is printed on your diploma, please follow the email instructions to submit a name update and supporting name change documentation.<\/p>\n

Villanova Baseball Filing Competition \u2013 Application Due October 10th<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Temple Law students are invited to participate in Villanova Law School\u2019s regional Baseball Filing Competition, tentatively scheduled for Friday, November 4th<\/sup> and Saturday, November 5th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

The Villanova Baseball Filing Day Competition is a simulated exercise intended to mimic negotiations between MLB Players Association (MLBPA) player agents and MLB club executives before the salary arbitration Exchange Date between the MLB Labor Relations Department and the MLBPA as governed by Major League Baseball’s Basic Agreement. Participants will be able to build oral advocacy and negotiation skills while handling baseball statistics and player valuation information in order to come to resolution with opposing counsel. Winners will be selected by judges from the baseball industry including player agents, team officials, and attorneys working in the space.<\/p>\n

Meltzer Fellowships through the Sheller Center for Social Justice<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

Meltzer Social Justice Grants offer stipends of $1,000 to $3,000 to students who design and carry out innovative social justice projects. Applications are welcomed on a rolling basis as long as funding is available, and can be for work planned to occur this fall; over the course of both semesters; or in the spring semester. Philadelphia Bar Association Workers\u2019 Comp Section DE&I Scholarship \u2013 Application Deadline October 31st<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion subcommittee\u00a0of the Workers’ Comp Section of the Philadelphia Bar Association is offering one $10,000 scholarship for a deserving student to help with spring semester tuition.\u00a0There will be one winner from a pool of all participating schools (Temple and Drexel).<\/p>\n

The applicants can be from any year of law school. All applications must answer the prompt with a 1-2 page response. A letter of recommendation from a professor (may be law school or undergrad) OR an Employer must accompany\u00a0the application. If the letters of recommendation do not come in with the essay, please make sure the professor or supervisor clearly identifies which applicant the letter is for.<\/p>\n

All applications will be judged anonymously by the Diversity and Inclusion subcommittee members. The members will decide which essays most appropriately respond to the prompt and have an accompanying letter of recommendation indicating the applicant’s deservedness for a scholarship that seeks to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. The subcommittee will choose the top 5 applicants and then pass those on to the Section’s three co-chairs for final judging. The judges will vote on the winner- majority rule. If there is a disagreement with the co-chairs, the chairs of the DEI subcommittee will be asked to be the deciding vote.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s prompt:\u00a0Please respond in a 1-2 page essay how you would use your life experience to enhance\/promote the goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion as an attorney in the Philadelphia Workers\u2019 Compensation community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

PA Bar Association FLS Scholarship Program<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

The PA Bar Association Family Law Section is extending invitations for interested law students to apply for scholarships to attend their Winter Conference from January 13-15, 2023<\/strong> at The Hershey Hotel in Hershey, PA. Scholarships will be offered to a maximum of three law students per law school. The Scholarship Award covers 100% of the student conference registration fee along with a stipend of up to $650 is available to cover reimbursement of travel and lodging expenses. PA Bar Association EELS Mentorship Program<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

The Pennsylvania Bar Association\u2019s Environmental and Energy Law Section (EELS) is in the process of launching this year\u2019s EELS Mentorship Program (the “Mentorship Program” or the “Program”).<\/p>\n

Since its inception several years ago, the EELS Mentorship Program has paired law students and attorneys interested in the practice of environmental and\/or energy law with experienced practitioners in these fields, who serve as mentors. Mentees and Mentors will be paired based on a variety of factors, such as geographic location and practice area\/area of interest as indicated on the Mentee\/Mentor application attached to this email.<\/p>\n

Through planned in-person and\/or virtual meetings or activities sponsored by the Mentorship Program, as well as\u00a0 one-on-one in-person and\/or virtual meetings, as determined by the Mentees and Mentors, Mentees will have the opportunity to interface with their own mentor, as well as other experienced practitioners, and gain insight into a number of topics such as developing the necessary skills for successful entry into the practice area of interest, networking tips and career development strategies. The duration of the Program is approximately twelve (12) months.<\/p>\n

Apply Today – UCLA Voting Rights Project Summer 2023 Legal Fellowship (Remote)<\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n

The UCLA Voting Rights Project (VRP) is the flagship project of the UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Initiative (LPPI). The VRP\u2019s mission is to ensure that there is an accessible and equitable system of voting for all Americans through impact litigation, research, and clinical education to expand access to the ballot box. The VRP has been involved in voting rights cases in Washington, New Mexico, and Texas; provided expert witness testimony in voting rights violation cases in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Missouri; and conducted analyses and filed amicus briefs in state and federal redistricting cases.<\/p>\n

The VRP seeks current law students of diverse backgrounds for its 2023 Summer Legal Fellowship, a 10-week remote internship with some in-person professional development and special events. To promote equity and diversity in public service legal professions, the VRP is pleased to offer summer interns stipends up to $2,000.<\/p>\n

In previous years, summer interns assisted in drafting briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court, helped prepare staff attorneys for court arguments, engaged in voting rights research and conducted analysis that was cited to uphold voting rights in federal courts, and co-authored published law review articles.<\/p>\n
