A description of this practicum opportunity and application instructions can be found below.\u00a0<em><strong>Additional practicum opportunities will be posted in mid- to end-October.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>More information on practicums can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/law.temple.edu\/resources\/student-services\/course-registration\/practicums\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>CIVIL LITIGATION PRACTICUM (UNITED STATES ATTORNEY\u2019S OFFICE \u2013 CIVIL DIVISION)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are up to three slots available for third- and fourth-year law students in this 3-credit Practicum supervised by Professor Marian Braccia.<\/p>\n<p>This Practicum with the Civil Division of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office in Philadelphia supplements traditional classroom study by offering students the opportunity to hone their legal skills by working with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) toward the resolution of cases in litigation or at the pre-complaint stage. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their substantive knowledge, sharpen essential lawyering skills, and appreciate professional values of the legal profession. Under the supervision of one or more AUSAs in the civil division of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office in Philadelphia, students will engage in and observe all phases of work of the civil side of the United States Attorney&#8217;s Office\u2014to include both affirmative and defensive litigation\u2014in subject areas including, but not limited to: torts, employment discrimination, civil rights, disability rights, environmental law, and healthcare fraud. Students will assist civil division AUSAs with a variety of casework, the nature of which depends upon the needs of each case. Assignments may include legal research, analysis, and writing; attending meetings and court hearings; assisting with witness interviews and taking\/defending depositions; drafting and responding to discovery; and participating in all aspects of arbitrations and trials (including witness examination). Externs will have regular opportunities for feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Students will need to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week to this Practicum. To participate in this Practicum, students must also be eligible for court certification. A security clearance must be obtained prior to the start of the semester&#8217;s work. Judges are responsible for scoring student attorneys and student witnesses as they litigate a pre-written case. In some cases, a judge may be assigned to preside and rule on objections as they arise. No experience other than a basic understanding of rules of evidence is required. A judge training will take place to help you understand how the Mock Trial will go. There will be two rounds on Saturday and two rounds on Sunday and judges are welcome to volunteer for as many or as few as they would like. While timing has not yet been determined, the rounds will likely take place from ~9:00 AM &#8211; 12:00 PM and ~2:00 PM &#8211; 5:00 PM each day. Interested candidates should send a CV and short statement of interest to Professor Rangel-Medina at <a href=\"mailto:evelyn.rangel-medina@temple.edu\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">evelyn.rangel-medina@temple.edu<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>Brooklyn Defender Services &#8211; Public Interest Law Fellowship<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"isPasted\">The Civil Justice Practice (CJP) at Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking rising third year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law school graduates to sponsor for a post-graduate public interest law fellowship project designed to focus on NYPD property seizures and civil forfeiture. The fellow will collaborate with the Science and Surveillance Project to assist clients of the criminal defense practice with property seizure related collateral consequences. BDS regularly sponsors fellows for Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Liman, Kirkland &amp; Ellis, and school-based fellowships.\u00a0Under the direct supervision of a Supervising Attorney in the Civil Justice Practice the fellow will apply for project funding to address an area of rising need in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>BDS represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a wide range of matters that impact their lives including housing, education, employment, and immigration. We are one of the largest public defense providers; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.<\/p>\n<p>CJP aims to reduce the civil collateral consequences for low-income clients who have had interaction with the criminal, family or immigration justice systems. Through legal advocacy in court and at various agencies, we assist people in eviction defense, benefits advocacy, returning seized property, and interdisciplinary representation.<\/p>\n<p>The Science and Surveillance Project provides technical support to attorneys in criminal cases and engages in larger systemic advocacy.
