Contact Mai Le at mai.le@temple.edu.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"section-13\">Spring 2020 School Designed Practicum with the Office of Chief Counsel, IRS \u2013 Deadline to Apply October 1st<\/h3>\n<p>There is one slot available for second and third year law students in this Practicum supervised by Professor Kathy Mandelbaum.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 experiential\u00a0 project\u00a0 offered\u00a0 with\u00a0 this\u00a0 Practicum\u00a0 is\u00a0 at\u00a0 the\u00a0 Office\u00a0 of\u00a0 Chief\u00a0 Counsel\u00a0 for\u00a0 the Internal Revenue Service. Students will work on a variety of assignments, including researching and writing tax law advice and assisting with tax litigation in practice groups serving the IRS\u2019s Large\u00a0 Business\u00a0 &amp;\u00a0 International\u00a0 Division, the\u00a0 Small\u00a0 Business\/Self\u00a0 Employed\u00a0 Division, and the Criminal Investigation Division.\u00a0 The program\u00a0 provides\u00a0 opportunities\u00a0 for\u00a0 law\u00a0 students\u00a0 to\u00a0 gain\u00a0 practical\u00a0 work\u00a0 experience\u00a0 and\u00a0 become familiar with the Office of Chief Counsel organization and its work. During the course of the student\u2019s practicum, the student will be assigned various tasks from each of the three Divisions so that they gain extensive experience working with all segments of the Service and taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p>Taxation\u00a0 is\u00a0 a\u00a0 prerequisite.\u00a0 Students\u00a0 must\u00a0 commit\u00a0 at\u00a0 least\u00a0 10\u00a0 hours\u00a0 a\u00a0 week\u00a0 to\u00a0 this\u00a0 Practicum. Schedules are flexible to accommodate class schedules.\u00a0 Students employed in legal positions in any\u00a0 capacity\u00a0 during\u00a0 the\u00a0 period\u00a0 for\u00a0 which\u00a0 they\u00a0 are\u00a0 applying\u00a0 for\u00a0 the\u00a0 Practicum\u00a0 will\u00a0 not\u00a0 be considered.\u00a0 Any non-legal employment during the Practicum must be approved by the Office of Chief Counsel before the Practicum begins. The office is located at 701 Market Street in Philadelphia, and is easily accessible by several modes of public transportation. The cover letter should be addressed to Jason Kuratnick.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"section-13\">Spring 2020 School Designed Practicum with the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, Healthcare Fraud Unit (Compliance) \u2013 Deadline to Apply October 7th<\/h3>\n<p>There is one slot available for second and third year law students in this Practicum supervised by Professor Jon Smollen.<\/p>\n<p>The experiential learning project offered with this Practicum is with the Civil Division of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office (USAO) for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Students will work on a variety of matters including researching health care and other fraud related topics (particular regulatory environments, state statutes and regulations); analyzing compliance-adjacent documents such as statutes, regulations, and enforcement documents and creation of topic area summaries; data analytics of public data sources on given topics; and identifying likely areas of fraud exploitation and\/or targeting of business units that are likely to be committing fraud, waste, or abuse.<\/p>\n<p>This Practicum is ideal for students who are committed to the compliance field and have a vested interest in data analytics and data mining. Interest in health law and criminal law is also preferable. There are no pre requisite courses, however, preference will be given to students who have taken compliance courses including Introduction to Compliance, Health Care Fraud: Investigation, Prosecution, and Compliance, and Drug and Medical Device Law. Students must commit to 10 hours per week. Jessup International Moot Court Competition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Phillip C.
