Fall 2022 Practicum Opportunities
Are you interested in pursuing a practicum for the Fall 2022 semester? We are still accepting applications for a number of our School Designed Practicums for the fall semester!
A practicum course offers students an opportunity to earn 2 or 3 credits in connection with an experiential learning project with supervision and evaluation by a member of the full-time faculty. Our School Designed Practicums, courses that are pre-approved by Dean Ramji-Nogales, provide upper-level students with a wide variety of experiential opportunities over the course of the semester. Check out our Fall 2022 School Designed Practicum Catalogue for information on available opportunities and application requirements.
Upper-level students who are interested in earning academic credit for an independent placement can also design their own practicum course. In order to register for an independent, for-profit, or repeat placement, students must complete the Practicum Approval Form by 12:00 PM on July 28, 2022. More information can be found on the Practicum Registration page of our website.

Brooklyn Defender Services – Public Interest Law Fellowship
The Civil Justice Practice (CJP) at Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking rising third year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law school graduates to sponsor for a post-graduate public interest law fellowship project designed to focus on NYPD property seizures and civil forfeiture. The fellow will collaborate with the Science and Surveillance Project to assist clients of the criminal defense practice with property seizure related collateral consequences. BDS regularly sponsors fellows for Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Liman, Kirkland & Ellis, and school-based fellowships. Under the direct supervision of a Supervising Attorney in the Civil Justice Practice the fellow will apply for project funding to address an area of rising need in New York City.
BDS represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a wide range of matters that impact their lives including housing, education, employment, and immigration. We are one of the largest public defense providers; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.
CJP aims to reduce the civil collateral consequences for low-income clients who have had interaction with the criminal, family or immigration justice systems. Through legal advocacy in court and at various agencies, we assist people in eviction defense, benefits advocacy, returning seized property, and interdisciplinary representation.
The Science and Surveillance Project provides technical support to attorneys in criminal cases and engages in larger systemic advocacy. The team investigates government and private entity use of new science, surveillance, and data analysis techniques and focuses on the civil rights implications of mass surveillance and unlawful practices by police.
