Volunteer Law Students and Attorneys Needed for Life Planning Clinic on Friday, January 24th

Looking for a low-commitment and rewarding way to give back to the community? Volunteer once again with the Probate and Trust Law Section’s Diversity Committee as we join SeniorLAW Center to co-host an in-person pro bono Life Planning Clinic! The clinic will be held on Friday, January 24th from 9 am to 1 pm at Ballard Spahr, 1735 Market Street, 51st Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Members of the Probate and Trust Law Section are encouraged to donate their specialized skills to help low-income Philadelphians avoid guardianships and tangled title, preserve generational wealth, and ensure their wishes are respected.

At the Clinic, volunteer attorneys will draft simple life planning documents for elderly low-income Philadelphia clients, including simple wills, health care powers of attorney, financial powers of attorney and living wills. Document templates will be provided, and virtual training will be provided prior to the day of the event. Volunteer attorneys will meet with clients to draft their documents.  Local law students are also invited to join the attorneys as volunteers to coordinate the drafting of documents in real time at the meeting!  There is no additional commitment beyond spending the morning drafting the documents with SeniorLAW Center’s clients.

If you are interested in volunteering for this Clinic, please email Chloe Mullen-Wilson at CMullen-Wilson@TimoneyKnox.com by Tuesday, January 21st.  We hope you will consider joining us for this opportunity to assist the community. There is high demand for these clinics – your efforts will be greatly appreciated by clients who would otherwise not have access to this important service.

Mock Jurors Needed for Temple Trial Ad – 1L Student Invited!

Several times over the course of the year, the master’s program at Temple Law School hosts “performance weekends” where the students’ advocacy is critiqued by veteran litigators and judges. The next of these performance weekends will take place on Friday and Sunday, February 14 & 16, 2025. The master’s students will focus on trying cases before jury panels. We are now in need of jurors, and we cordially invite you to participate in this jury trial exercise. Jury focus groups will take place on Friday, February 14, and full jury trials on Sunday, February 16.

Why Attend as a 1L?

If you’re interested in trial advocacy or litigation, this is an excellent opportunity to see practicing lawyers in action as they hone their advocacy skills. It’s also a great chance to network with experienced attorneys and judges.

As a 1L, you can also get a firsthand look at what advocacy education looks like at Temple Law, which is ranked #1 in the country for trial advocacy. If you’re considering registering for Temple’s Integrated Trial Advocacy Program (ITAP) in your second year, this is the perfect way to learn more about it.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Ask Me Anything (Re-Orientation) Help Desk – January 21 and January 22

Spring semester of law school is a very busy time for students (particularly for 1Ls!) and there are many information sessions, application deadlines, and opportunities.  We have learned that students sometimes miss these opportunities because the spring is a very challenging and busy semester (and we know you get a lot of email!). We are holding an Ask Me Anything (Re-Orientation) Help Desk on January 21 and 22.  This is designed to give all students an overview of the many opportunities that will come your way in the coming months.  We want to make sure that every student has a good foundational understanding of the importance of some of the opportunities at Temple Law.  We hope that providing a general timeline for the next several months, and explaining some of the acronyms that are commonly used, is a good way to start.  Please mark your calendars and join us from 11:30AM – 1PM or 4PM – 6PM.

Not Just Tax! Call for Volunteer Tax Preparers – Wednesday, January 22 at 12PM in K1D
