Fall 2024 – Week Six

COMMUNITY REMINDERS

Spring 2025 Practicum with USAO Criminal Division – Deadline Tuesday, October 1st at 12pm

We’re excited to share that we will be hosting a School Designed Practicum with the United States Attorney’s Office – Criminal Division in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania for the Spring 2025 semester.

This Practicum offers an incredible chance to work directly with Assistant United States Attorneys, gaining hands-on experience in federal criminal law through tasks such as legal research, trial preparation, and courtroom observation. A more detailed description can be found below. Please note, however, that the application deadline is approaching quickly – next Tuesday, October 1st.

Though we will release the first version of our Spring 2025 School Designed Practicum catalogue at the beginning of next week, we wanted to share this opportunity now due to the tight application timeline. If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your resume and brief cover letter (one or two paragraphs) expressing interest addressed to the “United States Attorney’s Office – Criminal Division Practicum Selection Committee” to lawpract@temple.edu by 12:00 pm on October 1, 2024.

If you have any questions, please contact Associate Director Noeleen Urmson at nurmson@temple.edu.

CRIMINAL LAW PRACTICUM (UNITED STATES ATTORNEY’S OFFICE – CRIMINAL DIVISION)

There are multiple slots available for third- and fourth-year law students in this 3-credit Practicum.

This Practicum with the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania supplements traditional classroom study by offering students the opportunity to gain practical legal experience through hands-on work with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) involved in the investigation and prosecution of federal criminal cases. Students will deepen their understanding of criminal law, develop critical lawyering skills, and appreciate the ethical responsibilities of the legal profession. Under the supervision of one or more AUSAs, students will participate in and observe various phases of the federal criminal process, including investigations, pre-trial hearings, trials, and sentencing proceedings.

Students will assist AUSAs with a variety of tasks, which may include legal research and writing, drafting motions and briefs, assisting with evidence collection, interviewing witnesses, preparing exhibits for trial, and attending court proceedings. Depending on the needs of each case, students may also be involved in drafting and reviewing plea agreements, assisting with discovery, and observing or participating in courtroom advocacy.

Students will need to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week to this Practicum. A security clearance must be obtained prior to the start of the semester’s work, which requires selected students to provide their Social Security Card, Passport, and/or Birth Certificate.

Mac Users: Hold Off Upgrading to macOS Sequoia

Apple released its latest operating system, macOS Sequoia, on Monday September 16. At this time, Information Technology Services recommends not installing this upgrade, as you may encounter compatibility issues with various applications used at the university.

Once our vendors certify that key applications used in our environment are compatible, we will notify you that it is safe to install this upgrade.

Questions? Please contact the Technology Support Center at tuhelp.temple.edu (click Chat or Request Help) or call 215-204-8000.

Important: Microsoft and Apple Upcoming Operating System Updates and Examplify Compatibility

Microsoft and Apple have announced the upcoming release of new operating systems Windows 11 24H2 and macOS Sequoia, though the official dates are not yet available.

ExamSoft is currently testing Examplify’s compatibility with these new operating systems. Certifying Examplify’s compatibility can only be completed after final versions of the new operating systems have been released because Microsoft and Apple may make key changes right up until release.

Exam-takers should not update their devices to the new Windows and Mac operating systems until we announce Examplify’s compatibility with the new versions. This includes beta versions that may be available to exam-takers prior to their official release dates.

If you are concerned that your operating system may automatically update, please check out this article for information on disabling automatic updates.

“I Don’t Belong”: Imposter Syndrome in the Legal Profession – Thursday, October 10th at 12PM

Please join us for a collaborative program between the Thomas R. Kline School of Law of Duquesne University and Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania.

Imposter Syndrome, also called perceived fraudulence, involves feelings of self-doubt and personal incompetence that persist despite one’s education, experience, and accomplishments. The majority of legal professionals experience Imposter Syndrome at some point in their legal careers due to self-imposed pressure, comparison, perceived inequities, and social injustices.

Our riveting speaker, Brian S. Quinn, Esq., will discuss the impact of the untimely death of his mentor and how trying to “fill his shoes” became more than a job; it took over his life. The consequences were a decades-long effort to cope with and then conceal those feelings with alcohol and drugs.

Asking for support is a sign of strength. The goal of this program is to break down barriers, melt away stigmas, and normalize ‘the ask’ for help. There is no one more important to advocate for than yourself!

Angela Tucker Book Talk – Tuesday, October 15th at 4PM

You are invited to a special event on October 15th from 4-6pm at Temple LawAngela Tucker, a transracial adoptee from foster care, author, filmmaker and mentor, will be speaking about her book You Should Be Grateful” Stories of Race, Identity and Transracial Adoption in the Moot Court Room. Please see the attached invitation for details!  This event is hosted by Professor Sarah Katz, Senior Fellow, Stoneleigh Foundation.

Tucker’s work focuses on anti-racist adoption practice, by centering the voices of adoptees through sharing deeply personal stories, well-researched history, and engrossing anecdotes from mentorship sessions with adopted youth. These perspectives challenge the dominant narrative of adoption giving way to a fuller story that includes the impacts of racism, classism, family, love and belonging.

The event is free, but attendees should RSVP in advance here.  All registrants will be provided access to Tucker’s film in advance of the event.  Copies of Tucker’s book will be for sale, and she will remain available to sign after she speaks.
