IP Moot Court Competition – Apply by Friday, October 25th

Professors Douglas and Gugliuzza are planning to advise two student teams this year in the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court competition (see https://www.aipla.org/resources/programs-awards/moot-court-competition). This is a prestigious intellectual property law moot court competition. The team will both write briefs and present oral arguments.

All 2L, 3L, and 4L students are eligible. The competition is typically patent-focused but may relate to copyright or other IP law. You must have taken or be taking Introduction to Intellectual Property to be eligible. Participation in this competition can be a very valuable learning experience, but you must be ready to put in substantial effort into research, writing and oral argument, which requires that you be strongly self-motivated.

The moot court materials for this competition are released in the Fall semester, and students will work on their briefs in teams of two beginning in the Fall through to January, with oral argument practices through to March. Students selected will receive 3 credits of Guided Research credit in the Spring semester for satisfactory work.

If you are interested in taking part this year, please send your resume, transcript (official or unofficial), and a brief statement of interest (no more than one page) to Josette Finnegan (josette.finnegan@temple.edu)as soon as possible, not later than October 25 at 5pm.

Mac Users: Hold Off Upgrading to macOS Sequoia

Apple released its latest operating system, macOS Sequoia, on Monday September 16. At this time, Information Technology Services recommends not installing this upgrade, as you may encounter compatibility issues with various applications used at the university.

Once our vendors certify that key applications used in our environment are compatible, we will notify you that it is safe to install this upgrade.

Questions? Please contact the Technology Support Center at tuhelp.temple.edu (click Chat or Request Help) or call 215-204-8000.

Important: Microsoft and Apple Upcoming Operating System Updates and Examplify Compatibility

Microsoft and Apple have announced the upcoming release of new operating systems Windows 11 24H2 and macOS Sequoia, though the official dates are not yet available.

ExamSoft is currently testing Examplify’s compatibility with these new operating systems. Certifying Examplify’s compatibility can only be completed after final versions of the new operating systems have been released because Microsoft and Apple may make key changes right up until release.

Exam-takers should not update their devices to the new Windows and Mac operating systems until we announce Examplify’s compatibility with the new versions. This includes beta versions that may be available to exam-takers prior to their official release dates.

If you are concerned that your operating system may automatically update, please check out this article for information on disabling automatic updates.

SPRING 2025 PRACTICUM INFORMATION

We are pleased to share some important information on our practicum course offerings for the Spring 2025 semester. A practicum course offers students an opportunity to earn 2- or 3-credits in connection with an unpaid experiential opportunity. In a practicum course, students will engage in a project for a real client under the supervision of an on-site practicing attorney or supervisor and a full-time faculty member. We offer two types of practicum courses: School Designed Practicums and Independent Practicums.

School Designed Practicum Catalogue – First Deadline October 21st

Our School Designed Practicums are pre-approved practicum opportunities with designated faculty supervisors. Each semester, we published a School Designed Practicum Course Catalogue that provides a description for each practicum course and the application requirements. We are pleased to share the first version of our Spring 2025 School Designed Practicum Course Catalogue and encourage you to consider the opportunities in the document linked here: Spring 2025 School Designed Practicums (1).  We will continue to update and circulate this list in the upcoming weeks and early summer months as additional opportunities become available or are confirmed.

The following opportunities on this initial list have a fast-approaching deadline of next Monday, October 21st at 12PM (noon):

    • United States Attorney’s Office – Civil Division
    • The Wistar Institute

Questions? Email lawpract@temple.edu or contact Associate Director Urmson at nurmson@temple.edu.

Independent Practicums: Information and Approval Form – Deadline December 12th

Independent Practicums provide students an opportunity to earn academic credit for an experiential opportunity not otherwise offered by the law school. Upon accepting an unpaid legal internship or externship position, a student seeking to pursue an Independent Practicum must obtain approval from Dean Ramji-Nogales by completing the Practicum Approval Form. Once approved, the student will then need to secure a full-time faculty member to act as the faculty supervisor for their practicum. The deadline to submit Practicum Approval Forms for the Spring 2025 semester is December 12, 2024 at 12 pm.

Questions? Email lawpract@temple.edu or contact Associate Director Urmson at nurmson@temple.edu.

Practicum Registration – Information and Practicum Agreement – Deadline January 6th

All students who wish to register for a practicum must submit a completed Practicum Agreement, signed by the student’s faculty supervisor and site supervisor, through the Practicum Agreement Submission Form on our website. The Practicum Agreement serves as the registration form for the practicum course. Once submitted, the student will be administratively registered for their practicum by the end of the add/drop period. Students seeking to pursue a practicum opportunity for the spring semester should plan on registering for a full course load during general registration and dropping a course during the add/drop period if they need to make room in their schedule. The deadline to submit Practicum Agreements for the Spring 2025 semester is January 6, 2025 at 12 pm.

Questions? Email lawpract@temple.edu or contact Associate Director Urmson at nurmson@temple.edu.
