PA Bar Association EELS Mentorship Program

The Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Environmental and Energy Law Section (EELS) is in the process of launching this year’s EELS Mentorship Program (the “Mentorship Program” or the “Program”).

Since its inception several years ago, the EELS Mentorship Program has paired law students and attorneys interested in the practice of environmental and/or energy law with experienced practitioners in these fields, who serve as mentors. Mentees and Mentors will be paired based on a variety of factors, such as geographic location and practice area/area of interest as indicated on the Mentee/Mentor application attached to this email.

Through planned in-person and/or virtual meetings or activities sponsored by the Mentorship Program, as well as  one-on-one in-person and/or virtual meetings, as determined by the Mentees and Mentors, Mentees will have the opportunity to interface with their own mentor, as well as other experienced practitioners, and gain insight into a number of topics such as developing the necessary skills for successful entry into the practice area of interest, networking tips and career development strategies. The duration of the Program is approximately twelve (12) months.

Students interested in participating can complete this application and email it directly to Pam Kance at Pam.Kance@pabar.org.

Brooklyn Defender Services – Public Interest Law Fellowship

The Civil Justice Practice (CJP) at Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking rising third year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law school graduates to sponsor for a post-graduate public interest law fellowship project designed to focus on NYPD property seizures and civil forfeiture. The fellow will collaborate with the Science and Surveillance Project to assist clients of the criminal defense practice with property seizure related collateral consequences. BDS regularly sponsors fellows for Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Liman, Kirkland & Ellis, and school-based fellowships. Under the direct supervision of a Supervising Attorney in the Civil Justice Practice the fellow will apply for project funding to address an area of rising need in New York City.

BDS represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a wide range of matters that impact their lives including housing, education, employment, and immigration. We are one of the largest public defense providers; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.

CJP aims to reduce the civil collateral consequences for low-income clients who have had interaction with the criminal, family or immigration justice systems. Through legal advocacy in court and at various agencies, we assist people in eviction defense, benefits advocacy, returning seized property, and interdisciplinary representation.

The Science and Surveillance Project provides technical support to attorneys in criminal cases and engages in larger systemic advocacy. The team investigates government and private entity use of new science, surveillance, and data analysis techniques and focuses on the civil rights implications of mass surveillance and unlawful practices by police.

To find out more information and apply, please click here. Interested students should also feel free to contact iLIT Executive Director Laura Bingham at laura.bingham@temple.edu to learn about the process, the specific goals of the project, and what it’s like to work with BDS.
