PA Board of Law Examiners – Information Meeting- Bar Exam and Character & Fitness

We are delighted that the Pennsylvania Board of Law Examiners will be presenting on September 30 at 12:00 pm in K2A. We will also be streaming this session on Zoom at this link: https://temple.zoom.us/j/93276678357 The PABOLE will discuss the Pennsylvania Bar Exam and the admissions process.  This is a helpful presentation that includes information about the character and fitness process and we hope you will attend. Moot Court Competition Team – Information Sessions and Tryouts

The next election in Pennsylvania is November 2, 2021. Now is the time to make sure you are registered to vote, and your voter registration information is correct and up to date.

Jessup International Moot Court Tryouts

The Temple Jessup International Moot Court Team is seeking 2Ls and 3Ls for the 2021-2022 competition. Team members receive 3 academic credits for participating in this fun opportunity where they will gain research, writing, and mooting experience and get the opportunity to meet prominent judges and lawyers. Prior experience with International Law is NOT required.

The tryout consists of an 8-10 minute oral argument based on a fact pattern and resources derived from last year’s competition. Interested students are asked to provide a resume and brief statement of interest (200-500 words). The fact pattern and resources will be released on Thursday, 9/2/2021. Resumes and statements of interest will be collected at tryouts.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES & TA POSITIONS

TAs Needed – Fall 2021 Integrated Trial Advocacy (ITAP) and Advanced Trial Ad (ATA)

Upper level students interested in applying to be a TA in ITAP or ATA should email Mary Beth Wilson at mwilson6@temple.edu ASAP. Payment is $12/hour. Work Study is preferred, but not required. As of now, Fall classes are being held in person and there is a mask mandate in our classrooms. If for any reason we are forced to change to an online class format (Zoom), you are expected to continue your appointment in this format.  Class assistants will:

  • attend each class and play the witness role(s) as needed;
  • act as liaison between the Trial Ad Office, instructors, and students, i.e. contacting students with changes in assignments, dates, or other information; handouts, student feedback forms processing, etc.;
  • make sure all forms are distributed, completed, and returned as instructed.

NOTE: This appointment fulfills one of the requirements for the ‘Trial Advocacy Certificate’ program.

WELLNESS PROGRAMMING

Weekly Wellness Tip – Mindful Mondays – Every Monday!

We invite everyone to participate in a 20-minute guided mindfulness meditation practice.  Mindful meditation involves paying attention on purpose to the present moment without judgment.  No experience is necessary.  Join Professor deGuzman at noon in K5A every Monday at noon.

Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers Confidential Office Hours

Ms. Laurie Besden, Esquire, Executive Director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers (LCL) will be hosting student office hours on September 28th.  Students can meet with Laurie to talk confidentially about stress, depression, or ethical and bar related questions.  If you have concerns about another law student or a family member, you can also speak with Laurie about that. This is an opportunity to receive help and we encourage you to utilize this vital resource. As always, LCL is available at any other time.  To reach LCL please call 1-888-999-1941.  Please note that Laurie does not share any information with faculty or administration – this is completely confidential.

Taking Care of You: Tools to Manage Stress & Imposter Syndrome

Mental health challenges are common among graduate students. These issues influence student’s trajectories in their programs– and beyond with many students reporting growing anxieties regarding career uncertainties. This workshop will help students explore ways to manage stress, imposter syndrome, and the emotional toll of graduate school. This event is hosted by the Wellness Resource Center and will take place on Monday, September 27th | 4-5 PM. Questions? Social Wellness – Join A Student Organization!

As the National Institute of Health explains, “[s]ocial connections might help protect health and lengthen life. Scientists are finding that our links to others can have powerful effects on our health. Whether with family, friends, neighbors, romantic partners, or others, social connections can influence our biology and well-being. Look for ways to get involved with others.” One way to get involved with others is by joining a student organization! Temple Law has over 30 organizations for you to join. SCHOLARSHIPS & WRITING COMPETITIONS

Roxana C. Arsht Fellowship

The Roxana C. Arsht Fellowship is to encourage law students, recent law school graduates and attorneys newly admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Delaware to pursue careers in non-profit sectors in Delaware. In an effort to encourage attorneys to work in public interest positions, the Fellowship offers financial assistance for three years to each recipient selected. Applicants must apply for the Fellowship within three years of law school graduation, and must secure a position with a non-profit organization that provides legal services that benefit the Delaware community, underrepresented groups, or indigent person in Delaware. An applicant’s annual salary may not exceed $63,000 to be eligible for the Fellowship. For the year 2021, the Fellowship Committee will accept applications from August 16 through October 15, 2021. A decision will be announced by December 15, 2021, with one award being approved. The amount of the award will vary each year as it is based on the annual interest earned by the Fellowship Fund. Recipients will have two opportunities to pass the Delaware Bar exam, and if necessary, they must sit for the exam in consecutive years to continue their eligibility. Metzer Social Justice Grant

Meltzer Social Justice Grants offer stipends of $1,000 to $3,000 to students who design and carry out innovative social justice projects. Applications are welcomed on a rolling basis as long as funding is available, and can be for work planned to occur this fall; over the course of both semesters; or in the spring semester. Information on the types of projects supported and application procedures are available in the Meltzer Grants Announcement.

TEMPLE 10-Q

The Temple 10-Q is the electronic newsletter turned blog about business law at Temple Law.  The Temple 10-Q features regular contributions by alumni, students, and faculty on various aspects of their business law work, features about accomplishments by community members, and announcements about upcoming business law events of interest. The goal of The Temple 10-Q is to build a community around the business law work at Temple Law.  The editors, Professor Jonathan Lipson, Professor Andrea Monroe, and Professor Jonathan Broder hope The Temple 10-Q helps to energize Temple’s business law community by creating a forum through which they can educate and inform.  We hope you enjoy the most recent edition which can be found at this link.
