2020 D.C. Law and Public Policy Summer Program – Information Session

Professor Nancy Knauer is holding an information session on the 2020 D.C. Law and Public Policy Summer Program on September 17th in K2A at noon.  Are you interested in how federal law is made?  Are you interested in experiencing the role lawyers play in shaping and implementing public policy? Banned: Immigration Enforcement in the Time of Trump” – September 12th 12PM K2B

Please mark your calendar: On Thursday, September 12 at noon in K2B, Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, Samuel Weiss Faculty Scholar and Clinical Professor of Law at Penn State will give a talk on her new book, Banned: Immigration Enforcement in the Time of Trump;  Jill Family, Commonwealth Professor of Law and Government and Director, Law and Government Institute at Widener-Harrisburg will comment.  The book provides an insightful and detailed overview of developments in immigration law and policy under the first 18 months of the Trump administration.  Prof. Wadhia is one of the country’s leading experts in prosecutorial discretion and has been leading the charge to challenge the Trump administrations myriad of unlawful efforts to restrict immigration.  Prof. Family is one of the country’s leading experts in the intersection of administrative law and immigration law, and has testified before Congress on related topics.  Free pizza will be served!  This event is co-sponsored by the Institute for International Law and Public Policy and the Sheller Center for Social Justice.  We hope to see you there!

If you were not able to come the first time, we are offering another opportunity for you to participate in a webinar conducted by AccessMax titled Financial Planning for Law School Students.  From developing a simple spending plan to outlining a financial plan, smart money strategies lay the foundation for every law students’ personal and professional success story.  This webinar teaches students how to apply core concepts of personal finance to make confident decisions about money and better achieve their short and long-term goals.  Rukiya Harris-Maiorano and Larry Bridges from the Law School Financial Aid Office will be joining the presenters to address any questions specific to Temple Law Student.  You can register for the webinar here.

Job Opportunity – Professor Amy Sinden is Hiring a Research Assistant

Professor Amy Sinden is looking for interested law second, third or fourth year J.D. students to work with her as part-time research assistants during the Fall 2019 semester on projects relating to environmental law.  Possible topics will include the role of cost-benefits analysis in EPA rule making, general administrative law topics, and climate change.  Work study required.  Interest in and knowledge of environmental law, administrative law, and/or economics is a plus, but not required.  Please send resume and transcript (unofficial is fine) to amy.sinden@temple.edu.

Job Opportunity – Law Library Student Workers 

Law Library Student Workers will perform a variety of tasks under the supervision of the Head of Public Services Librarian.  Tasks include information desk shifts, answering the phone, providing customer service to members of the law school, paging reserve materials, physical processing of books, editing current catalog records, shelving, and other projects as assigned.  Student Workers will be assigned shifts during the library’s public service hours: Monday-Thursday 8am-8pm, Friday 8am-5pm; and Saturday/Sunday 12pm-6pm.  Scheduling is flexible within those hours.  Work study students are preferred.  The Law Library may opt to renew this position for future semesters.  Interested students should contact Charlie Perkins at charles.perkins@temple.edu with a resume and cover letter.

Job Opportunity – Law Library Research Assistant 

Law Library Research Assistants will work in the Temple Law Library’s Public Services department, providing research assistance for faculty scholarship and participating in special projects that support reference activities.  Students are expected to work 10 hours/week during the semester, but scheduling is flexible.  Qualified candidates will have completed a law school first-year legal research and writing class.  Work student students are preferred.  The Law Library may opt to renew this position for future semesters.  Interested students should contact Julie Randolph at julie.randolph@temple.edu with a cover letter and resume.

Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition

The Phillip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition is a competition that brings students from law schools across the country to compete with each other in a mock trial as if between nations at the International Court of Justice.  The Jessup Team will be responsible for researching and writing legal briefs for both sides in a dispute between two fictitious countries.  Students will then form two teams of two to argue a side before a panel of judges, the majority of whom are actual judges or attorneys involved in the practice of international law.  This will involve a significant time commitment over the course of the late fall and beginning of the spring semester.  Students may earn 2 credits for their Spring Semester.  If interested, please email Kyle Offenbecher at kyle.offenbecher@temple.edufor more details.

Women’s Law Caucus Scholarship Application 2019 – 2020

This year, the Women’s Law Caucus would like to support three deserving upper level students (i.e., 2Ls, 2LEs, 3Ls, 3LEs, and 4LEs) by awarding each a $1,000 scholarship. To ensure fairness, the WLC Executive Board will not be participating in selection, nor will WLC Executive Board members be allowed to apply. Instead, a Selection Committee comprised of members of the faculty and administration will choose the recipients of the scholarships. The scholarships are focused on community involvement in general, legal community involvement, dedication to the advancement of women in the legal community, and financial need. Mindful Mondays – Weekly Mindfulness Begins September 9th

Everyone can participate in a 20-minute guided mindfulness meditation practice.  Mindful meditation involves paying attention on purpose to the present moment without judgement.  No experience is necessary.  Starting Monday, September 9, 2019 join Professor deGuzman at noon in K5B.

Volunteer Opportunity with the Employment Advocacy Project

The Employment Advocacy Project (EAP) provides students with an opportunity to advocate for clients at unemployment compensation hearings downtown at 8th and Market and write legal briefs submitted to the Unemployment Compensation Board of Review.  To become an active advocate, you must have weekly availability to take hearings; however other interested students can train and shadow hearings this fall to be ready for future semesters.  If you are interested, please fill out this form by Thursday, September 12th.  Questions?  Please email Mai Le at mai.le@temple.edu.
