May 1, 2023 is the last day to register before the May 16, 2023 election.

If you are not a U.S. citizen and a resident of Pennsylvania at least 30 days before the next election, you CANNOT register to vote.

Examplify Retiring Support of Windows 10 version 21H2

Examplify has now retired support of Windows 10 version 21H2 OS. If you are currently using Windows 10 version 21H2, please follow these instructions from Microsoft to update your machines.

As the semester’s end approaches, the Law Library is here for you!

As you finish your outlines or pull together the final pieces of your research paper, the Law Library can help:

  • Online study guides (Aspen, West Academic, CALI, and Quimbee) access information is available in the Canvas Module Online Study Aids.
  • Print study aids (E&Es, Q&As, the Understanding series, and more) are available for checkout at the Law Library circulation desk.
  • Law librarians are available at the Research Help desk, via tulawlib@temple.edu, or by Zoom (email to set up a time) to help with research questions.
  • We will have an end-of-semester celebration on Monday, May 1, from noon-5pm with giveaways, drawings, and general merriment.  Please join us!

2023 Law Library Student Survey – we heard what you want, and here’s what we’re doing

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Temple Law Library student survey!  Below is an update of what we’re doing in response to what you told us.  The conversation doesn’t need to end here – you can always share feedback and ideas with us via tulawlib@temple.edu.

Quiet spaces
One of the top complaints was that the library is too noisy.  Although we can’t change the atrium’s acoustics, we have increased signage to clarify where designated quiet spaces are:

  • Floor 3A of the library
  • 4 West (Broad Street side)
  • Floor 7 of the library

Furniture
New furniture is coming!  This summer the northeast lounges on levels 5A and 6A will get new furniture, including armchairs and study nooks.  Wooden tables and chairs on the northwest lounges also will be refurbished, and we will receive new chairs for the study carrels in the stacks, including seating for the high counters.

Lighting
We know – there isn’t much natural light in parts of the library.  If you crave sunlight, the north side lounges on level 3-7 are next to large windows, and the library offers a light therapy lamp for checkout.

Trainings
You love library trainings, particularly for practice topics.  But you want them at noon!  With food!  And recorded!  We hear you – at least some library trainings will move back to noon next year, and all trainings will continue to be recorded and posted on the Law Library Canvas page.  (If you aren’t on the Canvas page, email tulawlib@temple.edu to be added.)

Alumni access
Yes, you can come back.  Temple Law alumni can return to lounge on the new furniture, research with books, and access databases such as HeinOnline, ProQuest Legislative Insight, and the Foreign Law Guide from our public computers.

Additional concerns
Some of the issues and requests (printers, HVAC, therapy dog visits) are outside the library’s control, but they will be shared with the appropriate people/departments.

FALL 2023 PRACTICUM INFORMATION

We are pleased to share some important information on our practicum course offerings for the Fall 2023 semester. A practicum course offers students an opportunity to earn 2- or 3-credits in connection with an unpaid experiential opportunity. In a practicum course, students will engage in a project for a real client under the supervision of an on-site practicing attorney or supervisor and a full-time faculty member. We offer two types of practicum courses: School Designed Practicums and Independent Practicums.

School Designed Practicums

Our School Designed Practicums are pre-approved practicum opportunities with designated faculty supervisors. Each semester, we published a School Designed Practicum Course Catalogue that provides a description for each practicum course and the application requirements. We are pleased to provide our first publication of the Fall 2023 School Designed Practicum Course Catalogue and encourage you to consider the opportunities in the document linked here: https://law.temple.edu/wp-content/uploads/Fall-2023-School-Designed-Practicums-1.pdf.  We will continue to update and circulate this list in the upcoming weeks and early summer months as additional opportunities become available or are confirmed.

Independent Practicums – Information and Approval Form Deadline

Independent Practicums provide students an opportunity to earn academic credit for an experiential opportunity not otherwise offered by the law school. Upon accepting a legal internship or externship position, a student seeking to pursue an Independent Practicum must obtain approval from Dean Ramji-Nogales by completing the Practicum Approval Form. Once approved, the student will then need to secure a full-time faculty member to act as the faculty supervisor for their practicum. The deadline to submit Practicum Approval Forms for the Fall 2023 semester is July 27, 2023 at 12 pm.

Practicum Registration – Information and Practicum Agreement Deadline

All students who wish to register for a practicum must submit a completed Practicum Agreement, signed by the student’s faculty supervisor and site supervisor, through the Practicum Agreement Submission Form on our website. The Practicum Agreement serves as the registration form for the practicum course. Once submitted, the student will be manually registered for their practicum by the end of the add/drop period. Students seeking to pursue a practicum opportunity for the spring semester should plan on registering for a full course load during general registration in the coming weeks and dropping a course during the add/drop period if they need to make room in their schedule. The deadline to submit Practicum Agreements for the Fall 2023 semester is August 18, 2023 at 12 pm.

FINAL EXAM INFORMATION – SPRING 2023

Spring 2023 Exam Schedule

As you know, the last day of spring classes is Monday, May 1, 2023.  The exam period begins Wednesday, May 3, 2023 and ends on Monday, May 15, 2023.  If you do not see an exam listed on the SP23 Exam Schedule, please check the SP23 Take-Home Exam Schedule and SP23 Free Slot Schedule.

Students with a SP23 Free Slot exam can take the exam at any Free Slot on the SP23 Exam Schedule. You do not need to need to notify us beforehand – just come to Exam Central and we will have the exam ready for you.

Please also note that occasionally a faculty member changes the format or length of an exam, or sometimes we change the exam room.  Although these schedules are as accurate as we can make them, we ask that you please check the exam schedule online in the weeks leading up to the exam period.

Saturday Exam Option (Upper-Level Students and 1LE Students)

We are administering exam sessions on Saturday, May 5, 2023 and Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 9AM.

All evening division students (1LE-4LE) may move exams from the originally scheduled date to either/both Saturday(s) as long as the Saturday is subsequent to the original date of the exam (you are not permitted to take an exam before the originally scheduled date.)  If you are an evening student requesting to take an exam on Saturday and you missed the deadline to complete the form, please email Director Walden.

Any upper-level student who would like to take an exam that was already approved as a conflict on a Saturday may do so and should email Director Walden since the form is now closed. Again, please note that you are not permitted to take an exam before the originally scheduled date.

Exam Reminders

  • Password for secure mock exam: tlaw1234
  • Password for unsecure mock exam: LAW123
  • Most in person exams are secure. That means any study materials you plan to use for an open book exam must be in hard copy.
  • You are not permitted to talk to your professor about the exam after the day the exam is scheduled even if your exam is deferred and you are studying for it later.
  • Any questions about a take home exam must be directed to the administration. Do not contact your professor.
  • Secondary devices (tablets, e-readers, additional monitors, etc) are not permitted.
  • You will not receive a confirmation email when submitting take home exams.
  • If your in person exam has a word limit, you can check the word count in Examplify by clicking on the document icon next to the character count on the bottom of the screen.
  • If you are taking a Free Slot exam, Saturday exam, or testing in Barrack Hall, you must keep your own time.

Parking and Commuting for Final Exams

Commencement ceremonies for a number of Temple’s colleges and schools are scheduled for May 8th, 10th, 11th, and 12th. This may result in increased traffic and parking near the law school. Please plan accordingly to ensure you arrive to campus timely for your final exams. If you have a parking permit for one of the university lots or garages, keep an eye out emails from parking@temple.edu with important updates and notifications regarding parking during this time. JOB OPPORTUNITIES AND TA POSITIONS

Summer Research Position – Dean Ramji-Nogales – Application Deadline May 1st

Dean Ramji-Nogales is looking for a summer research assistant to conduct research on the state of exception in El Salvador as well as the human rights situation in other Central American countries related to asylum claims. There is plenty of work for a full-time RA (40 hours per week), but she is happy to entertain applications from interested students who have less availability. The ability to research in Spanish and prior experience with asylum law are beneficial but not required. Please submit a cover letter describing your interest in the position and any relevant experience, a current resume, and a transcript to jayarn@temple.edu by May 1. The position will be filled on a rolling basis.

Summer Research Assistant Position – Professor Sinden

Professor Amy Sinden is looking for interested law students to work with her either full or part-time as research assistants during the summer of 2023 on projects relating to environmental law.  Possible topics will include the role of cost-benefit analysis in EPA rule making, general administrative law topics, and climate change.  Work-study required.  Interest in and knowledge of environmental law, administrative law, and/or economics is a plus, but not required. Please send resume and transcript (unofficial) to Amy.Sinden@temple.edu.  Applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

Temple Campus Walking Escort Program

To request an escort,

Call: 8-WALK (8-9255) from a campus phone, or call: 215-777-9255 from a cell phone.Escort service is available daily from 4 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. Security Bike Officers provide escort services and maintain communication with Temple Police. Patrol boundaries are Susquehanna Avenue on the north to Jefferson Street on the south, with the exception of 13th to Broad Street, where the southern boundary is Girard Avenue. The western border is 18th Street and the patrol area extends east to 9th Street

Temple Flight Program

Flight is Temple University’s nighttime fixed-route shuttle loop service. Flight-branded shuttles circulate throughout the areas within and surrounding the main campus patrol zone, and pick up and drop off students at each of its over 40 stops. The shuttles arrive approximately every 15 minutes at each stop, and you can track the locations of each shuttle in real time using the TransLoc app.

  • Any student, faculty, or staff member with a valid TUid can use Flight. A valid TUid can be your physical or mobile OWLcard.
  • Flight operates 7 days per week from 6 PM to 2 AM, and the shuttles arrive at each drop-off and pick-up location every 15 minutes during this service time. The service continues to operate in a modified form during university breaks.
  • Flight serves the Main Campus patrol zone. It operates in two loops – the north loop, which covers the northern parts of the patrol zone, and the south loop, which covers the southern and eastern parts of the patrol zone. Shuttles on each loop follow a fixed route around that loop.

Flight shuttles can be tracked in real time using the TransLoc App during hours of operation. Use the website or app to plan your arrival at the shuttle stop most convenient for you – the shuttle driver will stop for you if they see you at the stop, but the shuttle will continue on its way if no one is waiting. Display your Temple ID when boarding the shuttle, and when you’re a block or so from your destination, let the driver know so they can stop the shuttle and let you off.

RAVE Temple Guardian: Campus Personal Safety Mobile App

RAVE Temple Guardian is a new one-touch personal safety mobile app that allows students, faculty and staff to connect directly with Temple University Police.

Setting Up the App 

Before setting up the Temple Guardian app, verify that Temple has your phone on file.

  • Log in to TUportal.
  • Click “Manage My Account” in the upper-right portion of the screen.
  • Click “Manage Addresses and Phones.”
  • Make sure your phone number is listed with a Phone Type of Mobile—Personal or Mobile—Work. If not, click “Add phone” and follow the prompts to add it.

Then, follow the steps below.

  • Search “Rave Guardian” in the Apple App Store for iPhones or Google Play Store for Android phones. Once downloaded, Temple Guardian will also be integrated within TUmobile.
  • Register using your Temple AccessNet username. Note that email aliases cannot be used when registering for the app.
  • Once registered, you can access new key campus safety features, such as choosing to chat with Temple Police, call Temple Police, call 911 or start a virtual safe walk.
  • In the app, users can also update emergency contacts, vehicle information and choose to share their profile directly with 911.

Virtual Safety Walk

In the app, users can choose to set a “guardian,” who can be a member of their friends or family, or a member of the Temple University Police Department. To access the virtual safe walk feature, users must first allow Temple Guardian to access their location. Then, users can set a fixed time for their departure and arrival, and their guardians are notified when they reach their destination.

Chat with Temple University Police

You can directly connect with Temple Police and discreetly report suspicious activity. To initiate a chat with Temple University Police, on the Temple Guardian main screen, tap “Chat with Police,” and then tap “Chat with TU Police.” To report the tip anonymously, tap the slider next to “Go Anonymous.” The screen will go dark.

PA Disciplinary Board – Monthly Newsletter – March edition now available

The Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania is responsible for regulating attorney conduct in Pennsylvania. The Disciplinary Board promotes ethics education, misconduct prevention, and well-being within the legal community. You can find important information and updates by subscribing to the Disciplinary Board’s monthly newsletter.

The March edition features the Board’s 2022 Annual Report, top legal tech stories, and a basic introduction to meditation for lawyers. All recent past editions can be found in the Newsletter Archives. You can also keep up with Board news and resources on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

2022-2023 MPRE Dates and Deadlines

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is a two-hour, 60-question multiple-choice examination administered three times per year. It is required for admission to the bars in almost every jurisdiction in the United States. Registration for the remaining 2023 MPRE test dates is now open.
