Early Deadline for Spring 2023 Practicum – United States Attorney’s Office: Civil Division
We are now collecting applications for our School Designed Practicum with the United States Attorney’s Office – Civil Division for the Spring 2023 semester. A description of this practicum opportunity and application instructions can be found below. Additional practicum opportunities will be posted in mid- to end-October. More information on practicums can be found here.
CIVIL LITIGATION PRACTICUM (UNITED STATES ATTORNEY’S OFFICE – CIVIL DIVISION)
There are up to three slots available for third- and fourth-year law students in this 3-credit Practicum supervised by Professor Marian Braccia.
This Practicum with the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia supplements traditional classroom study by offering students the opportunity to hone their legal skills by working with Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) toward the resolution of cases in litigation or at the pre-complaint stage. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their substantive knowledge, sharpen essential lawyering skills, and appreciate professional values of the legal profession. Under the supervision of one or more AUSAs in the civil division of the United States Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia, students will engage in and observe all phases of work of the civil side of the United States Attorney’s Office—to include both affirmative and defensive litigation—in subject areas including, but not limited to: torts, employment discrimination, civil rights, disability rights, environmental law, and healthcare fraud. Students will assist civil division AUSAs with a variety of casework, the nature of which depends upon the needs of each case. Assignments may include legal research, analysis, and writing; attending meetings and court hearings; assisting with witness interviews and taking/defending depositions; drafting and responding to discovery; and participating in all aspects of arbitrations and trials (including witness examination). Externs will have regular opportunities for feedback.
Students will need to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week to this Practicum. To participate in this Practicum, students must also be eligible for court certification. A security clearance must be obtained prior to the start of the semester’s work. If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your resume, a copy of your transcript, a writing sample, and a letter of interest addressed to the “United States Attorney’s Office – Civil Division Practicum Selection Committee” to lawpract@temple.edu by 12:00 pm on Monday, October 10, 2022.

PA Bar Association EELS Mentorship Program
The Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Environmental and Energy Law Section (EELS) is in the process of launching this year’s EELS Mentorship Program (the “Mentorship Program” or the “Program”).
Since its inception several years ago, the EELS Mentorship Program has paired law students and attorneys interested in the practice of environmental and/or energy law with experienced practitioners in these fields, who serve as mentors. SAVE THE DATE – Dopesick Author Beth Macy to Speak at Temple Law School – September 30th at 3 pm
Over one million Americans have died by overdose since 1996, at least half due to prescription opioids. Reporter Beth Macy has chronicled the causes, effects and cures of this crisis in the award-winning Dopesick (now an Emmy-winning series on Hulu) and in her new book, Raising Lazarus. Lazarus contrasts two very different faces of the opioid crisis: the gritty front lines of harm reduction and the rarified chambers of the United States Bankruptcy Court in New York, where Purdue Pharma—the company generally thought to have triggered the crisis—and its owners, the wealthy and secretive Sackler family, seek to buy their way out of liability for their role in it. The recent decision by opioid-maker Endo to use bankruptcy suggests that Purdue is viewed as a template for opioid makers seeking to limit liability for their role in contributing to the crisis.
Macy will come to Temple Law School Friday, September 30, 2022, 3:00-5:30 pm, to discuss the opioid crisis with a panel of experts, including host Jonathan Lipson (Harold Kohn Professor of Law), attorney Michael Quinn (counsel to a group of opioid survivors and activists) and public-health researcher Evan Anderson (Senior Fellow, Center for Public Health Initiatives, University of Pennsylvania).
Please join us for this special event. Please RSVP using this landing page.

The Civil Justice Practice (CJP) at Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is seeking rising third year law students, judicial law clerks, and recent law school graduates to sponsor for a post-graduate public interest law fellowship project designed to focus on NYPD property seizures and civil forfeiture. The fellow will collaborate with the Science and Surveillance Project to assist clients of the criminal defense practice with property seizure related collateral consequences. BDS regularly sponsors fellows for Equal Justice Works, Skadden, Liman, Kirkland & Ellis, and school-based fellowships. Under the direct supervision of a Supervising Attorney in the Civil Justice Practice the fellow will apply for project funding to address an area of rising need in New York City.
BDS represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a wide range of matters that impact their lives including housing, education, employment, and immigration. We are one of the largest public defense providers; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.
CJP aims to reduce the civil collateral consequences for low-income clients who have had interaction with the criminal, family or immigration justice systems. Through legal advocacy in court and at various agencies, we assist people in eviction defense, benefits advocacy, returning seized property, and interdisciplinary representation.
The Science and Surveillance Project provides technical support to attorneys in criminal cases and engages in larger systemic advocacy. The team investigates government and private entity use of new science, surveillance, and data analysis techniques and focuses on the civil rights implications of mass surveillance and unlawful practices by police.
