The American Bar Association Forum on Construction Law is
Looking for the Best Law Student Writers in the Country.

For the past seven years, the ABA Forum on Construction Law
has held an annual Law Student Writing Competition. Through
the Competition, the Forum introduces itself to the next
generation of construction lawyers and pursues its mission of
“Building the Best Construction Lawyers.” And, talented law
student writers gain the opportunity to demonstrate their skill to
the Forum and attend its fall meeting. The Law Student Writing
Competition was prompted, in part, by the increasing number of
law school courses dedicated to construction law.

The competition prizes are worth the chase. The winning author
receives a $2,000 prize, travel expenses and registration for the
2018 Forum Fall Meeting in early October in Montreal, Canada*
(where the winner is introduced and receives a plaque), a oneyear
Forum membership, recognition in The Forum newsletter,
Under Construction, the Forum Flash, and on The Forum’s
website, plus the opportunity to be published in one of the
Forum’s two publications, Under Construction or The
Construction Lawyer. In addition, the judges may choose to
recognize one or more authors as finalists, who will receive
recognition and the opportunity to be published.

Articles may now be submitted for the 2017-2018 Forum Law
Student Writing Competition. Law professors may directly
submit their students’ articles to the Competition. The
Competition is open to all law students in good standing and
attending an ABA accredited law school during any time during
2017 or 2018.

Students may submit articles on any construction law topic. The
format should resemble the articles published in either of The
Forum’s two publications, The Construction Lawyer (law journal
format with guidelines in the link below) and Under Construction
(newsletter format with articles of 1000-2000 words).

Any law student interested in participating in the competition
can request the assignment of a Competition Mentor, with
whom the student can discuss ideas for relevant topics in
construction law. Please contact Marilyn Klinger by email
(mklinger@smtdlaw.com) for your Competition Mentor
assignment.

Senior ABA Forum members will judge the submissions.
Criteria for selection include creativity, clarity and precision of
writing, strength of argument, novelty and timeliness of subject,
and quality of research.

The deadline for submission of articles for the 2017-2018
competition is Monday, July 9, 2018.

All articles should besubmitted in Word format to Marilyn Klinger
mklinger@smtdlaw.com and Tamara Harrington,
tamara.harrington@americanbar.org.
